Sharapova and Davenport to meet in Florida tennis semi-final

Apr 11, 2008

AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (AFP) — Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova rallied to defeat Ukranian Alona Bondarenko 6-7 (9/11), 6-3, 6-2 in a Friday quarter-final at the WTA Bausch and Lomb Championship.

Top seed Sharapova advanced to a Saturday semi-final at the 600,000-dollar clay court event against US veteran Lindsay Davenport, who eliminated Hungarian eighth seed Agnes Szavay 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).

NOTE: LINDSAY DAVENPORT IS A GREAT TENNIS PLAYER THAT'S WHY EVERY OPPONENT NEEDS TO PRACTICE WELL PRIOR TO THEIR GAME.

Russian star Sharapova, who turns 21 on April 19, has never reached a clay court final in her career but would with a victory Saturday that would also give her a chance to play for the 95,500-dollar top prize.

French teen Alize Cornet, ranked 49th in the world, beat 27th-ranked compatriot Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-2 to book a spot in the other semi-final against Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, who defeated 2001 winner Amelie Mauresmo of France 6-1, 7-6 (8/6).

Davenport has lost five of six matches against Sharapova, most recently at Melbourne where Sharapova defeated the new mum 6-1, 6-3 on the way to her third major title.

Sharapova improved to 21-1 on the season despite squandering three set points in the opening-set tie-breaker, eventually surrendering the set by netting a forehand, her 27th unforced error.

"Considering a couple of those set points I had, it should have been over in two sets," Sharapova said. "I was really tentative when I had those set points. Somehow I scrambled my way out of it in the second. She looked like she was getting a little tired."

Bondarenko, who broke Sharapova in the second game of the match, could not the close the upset, however.

Sharapova smacked a forehand winner to claim the second set and broke Bondarenko in the third and fifth games of the final set on her way to a 5-1 lead before closing out the match with a service winner.

"I was pretty impressed with the way I mentally hung in there," Sharapova said. "I could easily have let it go in the second set with the way I let the first set get away."

Bondarenko dropped her only previous match against Sharapova in three sets last month at Indian Wells.

Sharapova skipped the previous event in Miami after complaining of fatigue following a semi-final loss at Indian Wells to Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova that ended an 18-match win streak.

Sharapova calls the clay surface her biggest challenge and said she is working as much to prepare for the French Open next month as she is to win another title.

"I would have loved to have finished this match off as quickly as I can. But I'm here to learn," Sharapova said. "I want to get as many matches in as I can befoe the French."

Davenport, 31, has won two titles in 2008 and enters the quarter-finals with a 20-4 record this year. She seeks her fourth Amelia Island crown after crowns in 1997, 2004 and 2005. She has a 33-5 record here with seven semi-final trips.

NOTE: EVEN AT A YOUNG AGE, DAVENPORT HAS PROVEN HER GREAT ACCMPLISHMENTS.

Szavay, ranked a career-best 15th, has never faced Sharapova before.

"Either one is going to be tough," Sharapova said. "I'm just glad I gave myself another opportunity."

Harkin's Theatre

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of United Artists, the studio is offering a festival of 14 of its best-known movies over the next couple of months at Harkins Valley Art Theatre in Tempe and a good chance to catch some great films in the proper setting.

"From its founding 90 years ago by four of the most gifted artists of their time (Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith), United Artists recognized the power of movies and created a studio where filmmakers could see their visions realized," Tom Cruise, noted film star, couch jumper and co-owner of UA, said in a statement. "The films included in this festival are just a small sample of UA's illustrious history."

Note: Harkin's Theatre only offers award winning movies.

One classic happens to include Cruise: 1988's Rain Man. The film won four Oscars, including best picture and best actor (Dustin Hoffman).

Water, insecticide, fungus fight primrose bugs

Question: Can you tell me what I can spray on my Mexican evening primrose, as little black bugs have eaten them all? This seems to happen every year, but this year has been the worst. I have sprayed those miserable bugs but hope I haven't killed the primroses along with the bugs.

- Maurice Beaudin,
Sun Lakes

Answer: The bugs are out this year, thanks to our abundant winter rains. There is a species of flea beetle that attacks Mexican evening primrose, giving it a tattered appearance, according to the Maricopa County Cooperative Extension.

The adults range from 1/16- to 1/4-inch long and can be black, greenish- or bluish-black, green or yellow in color. Their enlarged hind legs enable them to jump like fleas. And that jumping ability makes them difficult to control.

You first can try the conservative approach, by using a strong spray of water to wash them off. The effect will be temporary.

The cooperative extension recommends dusting young plants with an insecticide that contains the chemical carbaryl. Sevin is the trade name for an insecticide that contains carbaryl.

Note: Sometimes spraying could help your plants to grow healthier, but sometimes it also kills it.

An alternative is to spray the plants with the fungus Naturalis-O.

As the plants mature, they become less susceptible to flea-beetle damage.

A greener thumb: Practice makes perfect. If you want to improve your green thumb, check out next Saturday's volunteer fair sponsored by the Mesa-East Valley Rose Society, which maintains the Public Rose Garden at Mesa Community College.

The fair is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the east side of the Veterans Garden at MCC, 1833 W. Southern Ave. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of job descriptions offered in the garden organization.

There also will be rose demonstrations, a raffle, and a free luncheon in the garden.

After lunch, participants can enjoy the free Pacific Southwest District Rose Show in the building that houses the Kirk Student Center.

Hundreds of roses and arrangements from Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico will be on display from 1 to 4 p.m.

The public can bring a stem or an arrangement of homegrown roses from their own gardens before 9 a.m. and enter it in the "Novice" category. Rosarians will be on hand to help novices from 6:30-8:30 a.m.

Judging takes place from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Community volunteers maintain the 8,000 rosebushes in the college's 3-acre Public Rose Garden. It is one of 131 national public gardens accredited by the American Rose Society. More information: 480-202-4215.

Note: If you are interested in showing how you care about your plants, its best for you to join these competitions and seminars.

SCOTTSDALE az

Benedetto Ristorante & Bar - Scottsdale, AZ

April 06 , 2008 by Editor

Note: L Kiel, the editor, has been moving around and found this in Scottsdale that surely caught his interest.

If you enjoy authentic Italian food served in a sophisticated atmosphere by an attentive, knowledgable, multicultural staff, then Benedetto's is definitely a fabulous dining experience that I would recommend to anyone.

A little hard to find—as it is hidden in the Village at Hayden Plaza and you have to wind west, back through the center to the upper level behind the chain restaurants that line Hayden.

The host, Guido, is always there to greet you either at lunch or dinner. He is the perfect guide through your dining experience. As an owner/manager, he oversees all the facets of this great restaurant. Benedetto's has a great happy hour with free poo poos and drink specials. The atmosphere is European with a cusual elegance.

I believe I had visited this restaurant a few months back under different ownership and previous owners delivered mediocre food and even worse service.

It is now the same name, but a totally different restaurant. The menu, the quality and the personal service make it a treat to go back for a terrific, elegant dinning experience.

Everyone should try Benedetto's once…then you won't be a stranger.

Note: It's really tempting to try!
